This is intended to be a series of tips (and observations) on playing freerolls based on my experiences in Project Freeroll. Not everyone will agree with all the tips and observations I have on playing freerolls. Please keep in mind that these are my observations and methods and as such this is more the way I play freerolls than the way everyone should play freerolls. Also please keep in mind that this comes from the perspective of dedicatedly playing freerolls over a long period of time and not from the perspective of playing a small group of freerolls.
The following deals with Full Tilt Poker and the specifics of the Full Tilt Poker software and rules. Not everything will apply to other Poker Rooms.
Tip #3 – Sit Happens Part II – Playing Against Sitters
Now that you have your sitters identified (covered in tip #2), you have to deal with the situations that will present themselves at the table in a freeroll when there are sitters at your table.
One key is to periodical check your information and make sure it is still correct. It is not at all uncommon for a sitter to show up at the table and start playing or for a player to grab some chips and then sit out.
There are two key aspects with the way the Full Tilt software deals with sitters that will affect your play against them.
The first aspect of the way the Full Tilt software deals with sitters is that the software will only force a sitter to fold their hand if they would have to contribute more chips to the pot. Any sitter not in the big blind will be folded. A sitter in the big blind will only be folded if the pot is raised. This of course means that if there are only sitters left to act once it is your turn to act, you should raise the pot and win the blinds and antes.
The second aspect is that the software affords any player (including sitters) all in protection. The software will play out the hand treating the sitter as all-in when their last chips are going in the pot.
Now, how do you deal with sitters? Well actually, that part is easy. You steal their blinds. The challenge is actually in dealing with the active players at your table and how they will adjust their play due to the sitters at the table.
I am a firm believer in the KISS method of poker player. K.I.S.S. Keep It Simple Stupid.
Applying that to this situation simply means – play your game as you would play it at any other time only making the basic adjustments.
If there are a limited number of active players at the table and they seem to be willing to avoid confrontation and simply steal the blinds and antes of the sitters, this my preferred way to build a chip stack.
If the other players don’t seem to want to blind out the sitters, I simply play poker and adjust for the number of players at the table. If there are 4 sitters, that then means there are 5 active players. I break out my 5-handed game the same way I would if I were in the final 5 in a SNG or the final 5 at the final table. This means you will open up your starting hand requirement and play more hands. This also means that you will deal with a maniac player in the same manner you would always deal with a maniac player; wait for the right hand and then try to bust them.
Now this means that you may be taking some risks earlier in tournaments that you would if there weren’t sitters present. But, this also means you’ll be building a chip stack earlier in the tournament than if there weren’t sitters present.
And I really do try to keep it that simple.
1) Stay aware of sitters
2) Be sure not to fold to sitters
3) Adjust to the number of active players at your table

One of things that occurs in freerolls that is much less likely to happen in buy-in tournaments is players registering for the tournament and then sitting out. I have several players marked on Full Tilt that I have never seen play a hand in a tournament, but have simply sat out in the dozens of tournaments that I have “played” against them.
I have seen multiple posts and blogs on various sites complaining about the sit out phenomenon. Complaining about sitters does absolutely no good whatsoever. They aren’t going to read your complaint. You simply have to learn how to adjust your play to compensate for the sitters.
The most important factor is awareness. Make sure that you are aware at all times of sitters at your table. The content of this tip is directed solely at play on Full Tilt Poker. You will want to examine the circumstances at other poker room and adjust accordingly.
On some poker rooms players that are sitting out are clearly marked by the poker software. This is not the case on Full Tilt Poker. But there is a way to determine who is sitting out and then to mark them so that you know who is sitting out as hands develop. Once the second hand of a tournament has been completed (this doesn’t work for the first hand as the players aren’t viewed by the poker room software as “sitting out” until after they time out on the first hand) you can tell whether or not a player is sitting out in the “Last Hand” history.
On the table you are playing on, near the top left right under the button labeled “Tourney Info”, is a button labeled “Last Hand”. Click on the “Last Hand” button and a new window will pop up showing a graphical representation of the last hand completed. In the lower left of this window is a scrollable area that list out a play-by-play description of the hand just played. If you scroll this to the top you will see a list of players and chip counts by table position. If a player was sitting out at the beginning of the hand it will say “is sitting out” next to the players chip count.
Back on the main table; double click the avatar for a player sitting out. This will bring up the notes for this player. Chose a color from the list of colors and use this to represent sitters. I use the default yellow since that makes things go faster. If do this for all sitters indicated, then you will have a quick easy reference at the table for who is sitting out.

Full Tilt Holiday 100K
On Saturday, December 27 and Sunday, December 28, Full Tilt Poker will be hosting tournaments with a 100K prize pool. You can buy directly into these tournaments with 2K Full Tilt Points. You can also play lesser buy-in Full Tilt Point satelitte SNGs to win entry.
Now the final method of entry is the one I am interested in. Full Tilt is also running freeroll satellite MTTs to gain entry. The top 3 (of 3,600) gain entry into the Sunday, December 28 tournament.

TIP #1 – You Are Allowed To Play Poker The Way You Want
It is perfectly acceptable to go into a freeroll with any agenda you wish. As long as you have a reason (or reasons) behind what you are doing, don’t be ashamed and don’t let anyone talk you out of it.
While you should be using freerolls as a method of building bankroll, you should also be using them as a method of learning.
Experiment while playing, but always remember to observe the other players reactions.
* Go all-in every time you have any two broadway cards
* Limp into every pot that isn’t raised regardless of the cards you hold
* Raise every pot that isn’t raised regardless of the cards you hold
* Only play pocket pairs
* Sit out until you are down to 10 BB and then practice your short stack strategy
* Never raise more than the minimum
* Anything else you can think of
Keep track of everything and keep track of it versus the field size and the blind speed. Some things will work better in larger fields; some thing will work better in smaller fields. Some things will work better with slower blinds; some thing will work better with faster blinds.

Working On Updating Free Sites List
Over the next several days, I will be working on updating the "The Sites That Host Private Freerolls On Full Tilt Poker" List to include some recent additions. I will also be adding a section to list private freerolls that are listing on the Full Tilt Poker software that aren't on my list with an explanation of why they don't meet the criteria for the list. Hopefully this will give any visitors to the site an opportunity to correct me if the information I have collected is incorrect.

One of the best days of project freeroll to date. I cashed 3 freerolls, made one final table with two other deep finishes. Only added $2.01 to the bankroll, but I played very well today and with a little luck I would have finished even better in the poker10000.com.
Bad beat alert! At the final table of the poker10000.com, I had pocket 6s on a JT6 flop. I raised ½ pot and my opponent went over the top. I pushed all-in and he called. I had him slightly covered. He had JT for 2 pair. He had 4 outs (2 if the other players at the table were telling the truth about folding 2 tens) and hit the J on the river for the full house and to cripple me.

I exited the tournament with pocket Aces. The flop was AQQ. My opponenet raised pot. That was over half of what I had left so I push all-in. He insta-called and showed QQ. Yep my flopped full house is beat by flopped quads.

w00t! w00t! Well it was only a $25 freeroll, but I placed 2nd and added $4.13 to the bankroll. I went in to heads-up almost even in chips, but I ran into a cooler hand (JJ-me vs AQ-him) after almost 20 minutes of heads-up and he doubled up through me and left me with only a few BBs. I actually built back up to where he had a 3-1 chip lead and then we both had pocket pairs (66-me vs 88-him).

1730 – cardschat $200 freeroll – A couple of brutal hands right after the bubble burst. AK and only opponent is short stack. He has AA of course. Next hand I have AK again. Flop of A96. Opponent has A9. ARG! But, it was a cash. Could have been a lot deeper with a little good fortune, but I did cash. Finished 56th for $0.48.

Well, today had to rank as one of the most frustrating days of play in my recent past. I kept getting my chips in the middle as a 70/30 favorite or better and kept getting outdrawn time after time after time.
But, the good news is, I had my first cash for the project. I finished 59th in the $100 railbirds freeroll for 23 cents.

Sites That Host Private Freerolls on Full Tilt Poker
Listed below you will find a list of sites that host private freerolls on Full Tilt Poker and the password requirements for each site. There are some sites I am a member of that you may find the requirements to be too much and there are others I am not a member of that you may find the requirements to be tolerable. I find it hard to be active on more than about 3 sites at a time.
The point being that you should explore each of the sites below and make your own determination as to whether or not you like the site and can meet the requirements.

The below listed sites currently have a freeroll scehduled on Full Tilt during the month of June 2009. I have removed all sites that do not have a tournament listed for June 2009.
Sites Where I Play The Freerolls
Railbirds.com
Requirements - The site requires you to register and establish a certain minimum level of activity. Usually filling out your profile and posting a “I’m new here” blog will meet the initial requirement. The site also has a continued activity requirement. The requirement is not specified in advance. Passwords are delivered via PM on the site approximately 1 hour prior to the freeroll.
Freerolls – Irregularly scheduled (but multiple times per week) $150 freerolls. These are usually No Limit Hold ‘Em but occasionally other disciplines are included as well. The schedule is usually published well in advance on the site (http://www.railbirds.com/tournaments/schedule/).
CardsChat.com
Requirements – The site requires you to join the Cardschat Freeroll Club to participate in their freerolls. You must for 65 quality post and maintain a minimum activity on the site to join and remain in the Freeroll Club.
Freerolls – $200 freeroll twice a week (rotating times on Tuesday and 13:00 on Saturday.)
Ixgames.com
Requirements – The site requires you to register. Apparently all registered users are eligible for the freerolls. Passwords are posted in the forum the day of the tournament.

Notes – rakeback.com is a rake back site that requires you to sign up for a poker room through them to get rake back. However, it appears that the only requirement for playing in the freerolls in registering for the forum.

Requirements – This site requires you to join the forum to be eligible for their Step 1 and Step 2 tournaments.
Freerolls – $25 freeroll on recurring (but irregular basis). $100 freeroll once a month.
Notes – Don’t get confused by these. The Step 1 and Step 2 freerolls are basically unrestricted $25 and $100 freerolls. You can choice to participate in the forums and earn points to use in the Step system to try to earn a WSOP seat, but you can also just treat these as $25 and $100 freerolls.
Notes - The $25 freerolls are continuing "through the world series". WDIAV has announced that after they will be announcing a new forum (and tournament) system after the world series.

Requirements – This site requires you to join the site. You must also join each event on the site to be able to view the password.

Sites Where I Play The Freerolls
Railbirds.com
Requirements - The site requires you to register and establish a certain minimum level of activity. Usually filling out your profile and posting a “I’m new here” blog will meet the initial requirement. The site also has a continued activity requirement. The requirement is not specified in advance. Passwords are delivered via PM on the site approximately 1 hour prior to the freeroll.
Freerolls – Irregularly scheduled (but multiple times per week) $150 freerolls. These are usually No Limit Hold ‘Em but occasionally other disciplines are included as well. The schedule is usually published well in advance on the site (http://www.railbirds.com/tournaments/schedule/).
CardsChat.com
Requirements – The site requires you to join the Cardschat Freeroll Club to participate in their freerolls. You must for 65 quality post and maintain a minimum activity on the site to join and remain in the Freeroll Club.
Freerolls – $200 freeroll twice a week (rotating times on Tuesday and 13:00 on Saturday.)

Requirements – The site requires you to register. Apparently all registered users are eligible for the freerolls. Passwords are posted in the forum the day of the tournament.
Freerolls – $50 freeroll on Sunday.
Notes – The password is released well in advance and there are a lot of sit outs in these tournaments.

Requirements – The site requires you to register. Apparently all registered users are eligible for the freerolls. The password is posted in the forum anywhere from the middle of the week to later in the week.
Freerolls – $100 freerolls on Sundays.

Requirements – This site requires you to join the forum to be eligible for their Step 1 and Step 2 tournaments.
Freerolls – $25 freeroll on recurring (but irregular basis). $100 freeroll once a month.
Notes – Don’t get confused by these. The Step 1 and Step 2 freerolls are basically unrestricted $25 and $100 freerolls. You can choice to participate in the forums and earn points to use in the Step system to try to earn a WSOP seat, but you can also just treat these as $25 and $100 freerolls.
Notes - The $25 freerolls are continuing "through the world series". WDIAV has announced that after they will be announcing a new forum (and tournament) system after the world series.

Requirements – This site requires you to join the site. You must also join each event on the site to be able to view the password.
Freerolls – The schedule and prize amounts have changed each month for 2009, but these seems to be one $50 freeroll and one $100 freeroll each week.
Notes - pokerspace.com also host freerools where you buy in using pokerspace points (earned in various manners on the site). These points buy-ins are the only ones currently listed on Full Tilt for the month of June.

Notes – The password is release on Monday morning and the tournament fills up in less than an hour.

Notes – The schedule for these is very irregular. At times there have been none for a month or more, but then at times they are held daily for long stretches of time.
